US Embassy in New Delhi stated that Voice of America (VOA), funded by the US government, maintains editorial independence. This comes after VOA referred to Tibet as “China” in its report on the 7 January earthquake in Tingri, sparking backlash from Tibetans and NGOs. Critics highlighted the use of Chinese place names like “Xigaze” instead of "Shigatse" Tibetan ones. The US extended condolences to victims, while Tibet advocates urged media to respect Tibetan cultural identity in reporting. Reports also allege China restricted Tibetan-led aid efforts, citing harsh weather and high altitude conditions.
