After serving an eighteen-year sentence, Tibetan political prisoner Yeshe Sangpo was released on March 25, though his health remains critical. Chinese authorities arrested the fifty-eight-year-old in 2007 for co-organizing a major protest in Sershul County demanding Tibetan language rights. A violent clash between demonstrators and police led authorities to accuse Sangpo of causing an officer’s death. Sentenced in May 2008, he endured nearly two decades in Ra Nga County prison. His release highlights the severe physical toll of China's prolonged detentions and the ongoing struggles of Tibetans defending their cultural and linguistic freedoms.
